7 Steps to Powerfully Complete Your Year and Set Intentions for the Next

As the year winds down, many of us take this time to reflect on what has been and envision what’s ahead. Today, I’m sharing a 7-step system that can help you powerfully close out 2024 and set clear, actionable intentions for 2025. This process blends reflection, planning, and accountability, ensuring that you step into the new year with clarity and purpose.

Grab a notebook, take a few deep breaths, and let’s dive in!

 


Step 1: Celebrate Your 2024 Wins

Take a moment to list all your celebrations from this year. These can include goals you’ve achieved, unexpected surprises, or even small, meaningful victories. No win is too small to acknowledge. The energy of celebration is what fuels your momentum moving forward.

Ask yourself:

  • What accomplishments am I proud of this year?
  • What unplanned victories brought me joy?

Write down at least 3-7 (or more!) things worth celebrating.

 


Step 2: Review Your 2024 Goals

Reflect on your 2024 goals in three parts:

  1. Accomplished Goals – What did you achieve this year?
  2. Partially Accomplished Goals – What did you start but didn’t fully complete?
  3. Abandoned Goals – What goals did you let go of, and why?

This step isn’t about judgment—it’s about understanding what worked and what didn’t.

 


Step 3: 2024 Challenges and Lessons

Identify the challenges you faced in 2024 and, more importantly, the lessons you learned. Every challenge presents an opportunity to grow or pivot.

Ask yourself:

  • What obstacles came up this year?
  • What lessons or gifts did they offer?
  • Is there anything I need to release or let go of to move forward?

This step allows you to close the chapter of 2024 with grace and wisdom.

 


Step 4: Write a Letter of Your Future Self

Now, imagine it’s December 2025, and you’ve lived your dream year. Write a letter from your future self to your current self, describing:

  • What your life looks like.
  • How it feels to live in alignment with your goals.
  • The advice your future self would give you today.

This letter serves as a personal roadmap and can even replace a traditional vision board. Keep it somewhere visible, or seal it and revisit it at the end of next year for a powerful moment of reflection.

 


Step 5: Break Down Your Goals into SMARTs Steps

Take your 2025 goals and turn them into SMARTs Goals:

  • Specific: Define exactly what you want.
  • Measurable: Attach numbers or metrics to track progress.
  • Attainable: Make it challenging yet realistic.
  • Relevant: Align it with your overall vision.
  • Time-Bound: Set deadlines to create urgency.
  • Self-Stated. Not given by anyone else but your own motivation.

For example, if your goal is to lose 20 pounds by December 2025:

  • Break it down into quarterly, monthly, and weekly milestones.
  • Avoid vague goals like “get healthier.” Instead, say, “I am 170 pounds on December 2025.”

Breaking big goals into smaller chunks makes them more achievable and keeps you motivated throughout the year.

 


Step 6: Take Immediate Action

What’s the one action you can take today to move closer to your goals?

It could be something small like scheduling a workout, planning your meals, or setting up a meeting. The key is to build momentum immediately.

Tip: Your commitment level to this action should be 80% or higher. If it’s not, revisit your goal and motivation until you feel ready to take the necessary steps.

 


Step 7: Establish Accountability

Consistency is most often the missing link in achieving goals. That’s where accountability comes in.

Ask yourself:

  • Who can I ask to hold me accountable?
  • Who already embodies the habits or behaviors I want to adopt?
  • What community or program can I join for support?

Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you to stay on track. Whether it’s a coach, a friend, or a group, accountability is key to sustaining your progress.
