Don't Feed Your Emotions, Eat How You Want to Feel!

food & nutrition Jul 21, 2024

Every symptom, craving, or behavior around food has a POSITIVE INTENTION. Therefore, these cravings and behaviors aren't the problem - they're simply the best solution you've come up with so far.

When things are tough, it's easy to turn to comfort foods for a quick mood boost. But the problem is, this creates a vicious cycle. We feel better for a short time, then experience guilt and weight gain.

What if I told you it doesn't have to be this way? It's all about knowing when it's time to change. I'm not asking for drastic changes - just small, manageable steps in the right direction.

Habit loop or health loop? The choice is yours.

It's a habit loop either way. So which loop do you choose: healthy patterns or distracting patterns? If you're committed and ready, the answer is obvious. Remember, your relationship with food and your body impacts more than just what you eat.

Let's dive into how to eat to generate positive emotions, not feed your emotions.

Step 1: Put on your curiosity goggles. Notice the cue. Are you tired or stressed? Curiosity is a fundamental wellness habit that allows you to become aware, without judgment. Noticing what's going on and what triggers you is the first step to change and transformation.

Step 2: Don't rush to react. Your brain and body might already be reacting for you. Instead, take a beat. Count down from 5-4-3-2-1, as the saying goes. These five seconds can help you calm down and control your actions. It helps you switch from a reactive pattern to choosing a new, healthier response. The more you practice this, the easier and more habitual it becomes.

Step 3: Take action! Maybe, like one of my clients Althea mentioned, you can make a deal with yourself. When emotional eating cravings hit, take a walk around the block. When you return, you'll be in a better place to decide what to eat.

Not sure if you're physically hungry? Drink a full glass of water. If you're still hungry after a few minutes, then eat.

Craving comfort food? Find healthier substitutes. Less sugar options or completely different foods you enjoy that are less distracting. Nourishment is much more than just food.

Another tip: Habit change experts recommend removing your triggers, like keeping comfort foods out of sight in your pantry. Out of sight, out of mind!

This is how you eat to feel. Generating positive emotions intentionally (not by reaction) is another essential habit for taking ownership of your health. Remember, when you own your health, you own your life!

Don't wait for after summer! Life is short. Take your first step today. Choose to live, choose to feed your body how you want to feel. You are what you eat. Eat for freshness, clarity, health, and a legacy of vitality! Your family and loved ones will benefit from a healthy you!
