Don't Wait Until January: Embrace Self-Compassion This Holiday Season

mindset & mindfulness Dec 10, 2023

The holidays are a time for joy, family, and togetherness. But amidst the hustle and bustle, it's easy to neglect self-care. This year, let's change that. Instead of waiting until New Year's resolutions kick in, let's embrace self-compassion right now, during this hectic time.

Think about it: when life gets busy, wouldn't you treat your child or loved one with extra care and understanding? Why not extend the same kindness to yourself?

What type of person are you in December?

Before diving into self-compassion practices, let's acknowledge the different ways people approach self-care during the holidays:

  • The "New Year's Resolution" Type: These folks wait until January 1st to start any significant changes, often setting unrealistic goals that lead to disappointment.
  • The "Preparation Pro" Type: These individuals are proactive, researching and planning for their future goals, like reading books or taking courses.
  • The "Not Ready Yet" Type: This group may not be actively seeking change, might not care, or might be avoiding self-awareness altogether.

Embracing Self-Compassion:

No matter where you fall on this spectrum, self-compassion is a powerful tool. Here are three ways to practice it:

1. Feel Compassion Within:

  • Write yourself a self-love letter, expressing appreciation and support for your past year and future aspirations.
  • Recall moments of selflessness or kindness you've shown others.
  • Practice self-forgiveness and acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes.

2. Give Compassion to Others:

  • Spread love and gratitude by writing heartfelt cards or simply expressing thanks to those around you.
  • Volunteer your time and talents to help others in need.
  • Offer genuine compliments and encouragement to uplift others.

3. Receive Compassion:

  • Pay attention to positive feedback and compliments you receive.
  • Accept acknowledgements with grace and gratitude, trusting that they are genuine.
  • Practice mindfulness and self-reflection to appreciate your unique qualities and strengths.

Start Today:

Don't wait until January 1st to start prioritizing your well-being. Take some time for yourself today, even if it's just a few minutes.
