How To Get What You Want in 5 Steps

mindset & mindfulness Dec 29, 2024

As we gear up for the new year, I want to share something meaningful with you—a 5-step reflective sequence you can use to set and achieve goals, whether they’re daily, weekly, monthly, or even annual.

This simple yet powerful process has worked wonders for me, not just in my wellness journey but in many other areas of my life as well. Let’s dive in!

The Power of Reflection: What Do You Want?

As the year winds down, it's a natural time to slow down, reflect, and ask yourself:

What do I really want?

Not just what looks good on paper or what society says you should aim for, but what truly lights you up and makes you feel good inside. Sometimes we approach goals with a "chase the carrot" mindset, thinking we’ll be happy after we achieve them.

But here’s the shift: Instead of chasing, why not create a life that already feels fulfilling as you work toward your goals?

Let this question guide you as you move through the next steps.

The 5-Step Reflective Sequence for Transformation

This sequence is designed to help you get clarity, identify obstacles, and take actionable steps toward your goals.

1. What Do I Want?

Start by identifying what you truly want in one or more areas of your life. It could be related to your health, career, relationships, or personal growth.

  • Be specific.
  • Write it down.

You can think of this in terms of traditional SMARTS goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, Self-stated) or simply write from your heart.

2. How Will I Feel When I Achieve It?

This is where the magic happens. Close your eyes and imagine already having what you want.

  • How do you feel emotionally?
  • What does your life look like in this new reality?

Engage your senses and make it vivid, as if you’re writing the scene for a movie. This emotional clarity gives your mind and body a clear "why" to aim for.

3. What Has Worked (and Not Worked) in the Past?

Take a moment to reflect on your past efforts.

  • What strategies have helped you succeed before?
  • What hasn’t worked, and why?

Sometimes, success leaves clues in our own lives, and identifying those patterns can help us avoid pitfalls.

4. What Is the Main Obstacle?

This question is key to unlocking transformation.

  • What is keeping you stuck?
  • Is it a mindset? A limiting belief? A specific circumstance?

For example, you might want to lose 20 pounds but don’t fully believe it’s possible. Identifying the obstacle—whether it’s a lack of belief, time management, or external distractions—helps you address it head-on.

5. What Action Can I Take Right Now?

Based on your answers to the first four questions, determine your next step.

  • Internal Action: This might be setting an alarm, finding a planner, or scheduling time for self-care.
  • External Accountability: Who can support you? Who can you ask for help or partner with to stay on track?

Accountability is a game-changer. Whether it’s a coach, a friend, or a group, having someone cheer you on and hold you accountable can make all the difference.

Wellness as the Foundation for Everything Else

Your Life Is Your Choice

To wrap up, here’s a quick summary of the 5-step sequence:

  1. What do I want?
  2. What is my emotional experience when I achieve it?
  3. What worked and didn’t work in the past?
  4. What is the main obstacle?
  5. What action can I take right now?

Remember, achieving your goals is an ongoing process. Reflect, reset, and keep moving forward.
